What Is Our Duty Toward The
Spirit?
Must depend upon the
Spirit.
The former account I made, O
Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2until the day in which He
was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the
apostles whom He had chosen, Acts 1:1-2
Must follow the Spirit.
Most assuredly, I say to you,
when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when
you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and
carry you where you do not wish."
19This He spoke, signifying
by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him,
"Follow Me." John 21:18-19
Must receive the Spirit. It is conditional on our receiving.
And I will pray the Father,
and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--
John 14:16
Not to grieve the Spirit.
And do not grieve the Holy
Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Ephes. 4:30
Not to quench the Spirit.
Do not quench the Spirit.
1 Thes. 5:19
To be continually filled
with the Spirit.
And do not be drunk with
wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
19speaking to one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart
to the Lord, 20giving
thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, 21submitting to one
another in the fear of God. Ephes.
5:18-21
To be full of the Spirit.
Therefore, brethren, seek out
from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and
wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; Acts 6:3
And the saying pleased the
whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy
Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a
proselyte from Antioch, Acts 6:5
And Ananias went his way and
entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord
Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may
receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Acts 9:17
And do not be drunk with
wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
19speaking to one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart
to the Lord, 20giving
thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, 21submitting to one
another in the fear of God. Ephes.
5:18-21
To be led and guided by the
Holy Spirit.
However, when He, the Spirit
of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on
His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell
you things to come. John 16:13
For as many as are led by the
Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:14
But if you are led by the
Spirit, you are not under the law. Galatians
5:18
To be sensitive to the
leadership of and obey the Spirit.
Now when they had gone
through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy
Spirit to preach the word in Asia.
7After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the
Spirit did not permit them. 8So
passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
9And a vision appeared to
Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, "Come
over to Macedonia and help us." 10Now
after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia,
concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
11Therefore, sailing
from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came
to Neapolis,
Acts
16:6-11
To bear the fruit of the
Spirit.
But the fruit of the Spirit
is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23gentleness, self-control.
Against such there is no law. 24And
those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. 25If we live in
the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26Let us not become
conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26
(for the fruit of the Spirit
is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),
Ephes. 5:9
To follow the teaching of the
Spirit.
But the Helper, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and
bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
John 14:26
To let the Holy Spirit change
us into the image of Christ day by day.
But we all, with unveiled
face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into
the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
2 Cor. 3:18
To pray in the Holy Spirit.
But you, beloved, building
yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
Jude 20
To receive the unction, the
anointing of the Spirit.
But you have an anointing
from the Holy One, and you know all things.
21I have not written to you
because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is
of the truth. 1 John 2:20-21;
But the anointing which you
have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you;
but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is
not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
1 John 2:27
To walk in the Spirit.
I say then: Walk in the
Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16
If we live in the Spirit, let
us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians
