The Work Of The Spirit
In Relation To The Believer To Convict Justify, Save, Assure, And Deliver The
Believer
The Spirit Assures the
believer.
Now he who keeps His
commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in
us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 3:24
No one has seen God at any
time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected
in us. By this we know
that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
And we have seen and
testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.
Whoever confesses that
Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
And we have known and
believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love
abides in God, and God in him.
Love has been
perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment;
because as He is, so are we in this world.
There is no fear in love;
but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears
has not been made perfect in love. 1 John 4:12-18
The Spirit Baptizes
the believer.
For as the body is one and
has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one
body, so also is Christ. 13For
by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks,
whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
1 Cor. 12:12-13
The Holy Spirit Bears
witness to the believer. Witnesses to four things.
For this is the covenant that
I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be
their God, and they shall be My people.
11None of them shall teach
his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the
greatest of them. 12For I
will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless
deeds I will remember no more." Hebrews 8:10-12
But the Holy Spirit also
witnesses to us; for after He had said before,
16"This is the covenant
that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,"
17then He adds, "Their sins
and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."
18Now where there is
remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
Hebrews 10:15-18
The Spirit Convicts of
sin, righteousness and judgment.
And when He has come, He will
convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9of sin, because they do
not believe in Me; 10of
righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11of judgment, because the
ruler of this world is judged. John 16:8-11
The Holy Spirit Enters,
matures, and enables the believer.
This only I want to learn
from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing
of faith? 3Are you so
foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the
flesh? 4Have you suffered
so many things in vain--if indeed it was in vain?
5Therefore He who supplies
the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the
works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Galatians
3:2-5
The Spirit Frees from
sin and death.
For the law of the Spirit of
life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:2
The Holy Spirit Gives
access into God’s presence.
For through Him we both have
access by one Spirit to the Father. Ephes.
2:18
The Spirit Gives
evidence of salvation.
And it happened, while
Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came
to Ephesus. And finding some disciples
2he said to them, "Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so
much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."
3And he said to them, "Into
what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism."
4Then Paul said, "John
indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they
should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."
5When they heard this,
they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6And when Paul had laid
hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and
prophesied. 7Now the men
were about twelve in all. Acts 19:1-7
The Holy Spirit Indwells
and assures the believer.
But when the fullness of the
time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5to redeem those who were
under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
6And because you are sons,
God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba,
Father!" 7Therefore you are
no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
Galatians 4:4-7
The Spirit Justifies.
who was delivered up because
of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
Romans 4:25
The Holy Spirit Places a
witness within.
This is He who came by water
and blood--Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is
the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
7For there are three that
bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these
three are one. 8And there
are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and
these three agree as one. 9If
we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the
witness of God which He has testified of His Son.
10He who believes in the
Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him
a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
11And this is the
testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
12He who has the Son has
life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1 John 5:6-12
The Holy Spirit Quickens.
It is the Spirit who gives
life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and
they are life. John 6:63
The Spirit
Regenerates.
Jesus answered and said to
him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the
kingdom of God." 4Nicodemus
said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time
into his mother's womb and be born?"
5Jesus answered, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot
enter the kingdom of God. 6That
which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is
spirit. John 3:5-6, cp. John 3:3-6
not by works of righteousness
which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing
of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, Titus
3:5
The Holy Spirit Restrains
sin.
And now you know what is
restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time.
7For the mystery of
lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so
until He is taken out of the way.
8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume
with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.
2 Thes. 2:6-8
The Spirit Reveals
God’s wisdom
But God has revealed them
to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep
things of God. 11For what
man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even
so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
12Now we have received, not
the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the
things that have been freely given to us by God.
13These things we also
speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit
teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1 Cor. 2:10-13
The Holy Spirit Reveals new
truth.
Jesus answered, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot
enter the kingdom of God. 6That
which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is
spirit. John 3:5-6

1 Cor. 2:10-13
The Holy Spirit Saves,
seals and guarantees the believer
Now hope does not disappoint,
because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who
was given to us. Romans 5:5
Now He who establishes us
with you in Christ and has anointed us is God,
22who also has sealed us
and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Cor. 1:21-22
In Him you also trusted,
after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also,
having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
14who is the guarantee of
our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise
of His glory. Ephes. 1:13-14
The Spirit Witnesses
to Christ.
There is another who bears
witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.
John 5:32
"But when the Helper comes,
whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from
the Father, He will testify of Me.
27And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the
beginning. John 15:26-27
The Spirit Works in
both the believer and unbeliever.
Nevertheless I tell you the
truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the
Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8And when He has come, He
will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9of sin, because they do
not believe in Me; 10of
righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11of judgment, because the
ruler of this world is judged. 12I
still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13However, when He, the
Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not
speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He
will tell you things to come. 14He
will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
15All things that the
Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare
it to you. John 16:7-15
And being assembled together
with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait
for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;
5for John truly baptized
with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from
now." Acts 1:4-5
The Holy Spirit
Works power within the
believer
Now to Him who is able to do
exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power
that works in us, Ephes. 3:20
